Our Story Starts With One Visionary—
and a Village
The Aster Initiative was founded in 2018 by Andre Farrell, an entrepreneur, community advocate, and father who saw a need—and stepped up to fill it. With over a decade of experience in accounting, entrepreneurship, and small business management, Andre has long championed economic growth in underserved communities. From owning a rum bar in Brooklyn to investing in Black-owned businesses and launching educational programs, his work is rooted in community empowerment.
In 2013, Andre’s personal need for accessible, high-quality childcare led him to create Katmint Learning, which started as a small neighborhood playgroup and quickly evolved into a full-day preschool. Katmint grew to serve over 50 children across two locations in Bedford-Stuyvesant, offering daycare, after-school, and summer enrichment programs.
Building on the success of Katmint, The Aster Initiative was born—focused on providing transformative enrichment programming to combat systemic inequities and create new opportunities for children and families in Central Brooklyn.
We don’t just meet needs—we plant seeds for long-term growth.
